Abstract : The aim of this study is to evaluate the influences of streptozotocin (STZ) induced experimental diabetes on the acinar cells, ductal cells and vascular endothelium of the submandibular gland in rats. A single dose intraperitonal injection of 65 mg/kg body weight of STZ was applied to the experimental group (n=12) and a 0.9% saline solution to the control group (n=12) of male adult rats. The blood and urine glycose levels and the body weights of the animals were measured. The submandibular glands were removed by the end of the third month and observed under electron microscopy. Specific differences were noted in the acinar cells of diabetic rats under electron microscopic evaluation. Numerous lipid droplets were observed in the cytoplasms of the acinar cells. An enlarged Golgi apparatus, dispersed endoplasmic reticulum and swollen mitochondria with damaged cristae were also observed under electron microscopy. Intranuclear and intracytoplasmic amorphous bodies were seen. Ductal cells were observed as close to normal. Picnotic and invaginative nuclei and enlarged vacuoles within the cytoplasm were present in many of the vascular endothelial cells of the stroma. Both acinar and vascular endothelial cells in the submandibular glands of diabetic rats were observed as influenced by STZ induced experimental diabetes.
