Abstract : | The purpose of this study was to analyze the secretion of neuropeptides such as sub stance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) into gingival crevicular fluids (GCF) and their relationship to inflammatory responses. Ten patients with gingival inflammation were selected and GCF was collected from them with sterilized paper strips. Quantitative assessments of SP and CGRP on the samples were performed by ELISA. We found that it was possible to detect secreted SP and CGRP in the GCF of patients regardless of the presence of gingival inflammation. The amount of secreted CGRP was higher in inflammed tissue compared to normal gingiva in the same subjects. These results show that peptidergic nerve fibers in gingival tissue have different levels of activity during gingival inflammation, compared to normal physiological maintenance. |
