Abstract : In studying a group of forty-five mixed dentition subjects with a hyperdivergent skeletal frame, it was evident that mandibular posture involved the anteroposterior position and the degree of hyperdivergency was related to the cant of occlusal plane. Different occlusal planes were examined to establish a functional determinant of different types of open bite malocclusions. The results suggested that the upper posterior occlusal plane is a significant determinant in creating different types of open bite malocclusions. The Class II group showed a significantly steep upper posterior occlusal plane, OP(P), steeper than that of Class I and Class III malocclusions. Hyperdivergency of the lower face seems to be related to the inclination of OP(P). The anteroposterior mandibular position was also related to the cant of the upper posterior occlusal plane, indicating that a steeper posterior occlusal plane created a more retrognathic type of mandible. Additionally, the inclination of the posterior occlusal plane with the increment of vertical dento-alveolar height is a critical element for forward growth of the mandible. These results suggested that reconstruction of the upper posterior occlusal plane is critical in the treatment of hyperdivergent type of Class II malocclusions.
