Abstract : It is important to understand the morphological features of malocclusion in order to reconstruct a functional occlusion. The features of Class II malocclusions make them especially difficult to correct. We measured and compared the occlusal plane and various parameters obtained from the cephalogram of class II malocclusions and that of normal occlusions. The objective of this study has been to gain a better understanding of the morphological features of high- and low-angle Class II malocclusion in order to establish a framework for a better therapeutic approach. In cases of high-angle Class II malocclusion, the mandible is small, retruded, rotated back-ward, and accompanied by a steep posterior occlusal plane. The steep posterior occlusal plane is correlated with a short vertical height of the upper second molars. The mandible is also small and retruded in cases of low-angle type of Class II malocclusions, but with a flat anterior occlusal plane. The flat anterior occlusal plane divides the occlusal plane into two segments. These results demonstrate that the skeletal features of the Class II malocclusion are closely related to the deviation in the vertical aspect of the occlusion. We conclude that correcting the occlusal plane by controlling the vertical dimension is extremely important in the treatment of Class II malocclusions.
