Abstract : The diagnosis and treatment of occlusion in craniomandibular dysfunction needs an understanding of the stomatognathic system. The stomatognathic system has been defined as "the combination of structures involved in speech, receiving, mastication and deglutition of food as well as parafunctional actions." This system consists of occlusion, the temporomandibular joint and muscles which are controlled by the central nervous system. Bruxism management as a parafunctional action is emphasized as one of the most important masticatory functions. Authentic functional occlusion was accomplished taking into consideration individual bruxism behavior by measuring condylar movement, adjusting the semi-adjustable articulator of balancing side and the working side of the condyles and examining of upper and lower teeth contact points using the bruxchecker. The diagnosis and treatment of occlusion with craniomandibular dysfunction can be established by careful consideration not only of functional movement during waking hours but also of bruxing mandibular movement during periods of sleep.
