Abstract : Two primary factors are responsible for the significant transition in recent biological and biomedical research: the massive increase in the amount of DNA sequence information and the development of technologies to exploit its use. Functional genomics is one of the new fields of biological science in the post human genome project era and DNA microarray or DNA chip method is one representative technology to make use of these recent discoveries. For a routine analysis of changes in the gene expression profiles of tissue and cells of interest, it is necessary to develop a specific DNA chip and an adequate method for processing the data obtained by scanning it. Herein we describe the basic principle of DNA chip methodology and give an example of a system that we are currently developing for the clarification of gene expression profiles during normal differentiation and for the diagnosis of pathological conditions in the craniomandibular system.
