Abstract : The objective of this study is to elucidate possible relationships of Mycoplasma-induced reactive arthritis (ReA) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The presence of Mycoplasma fermentans (M.fermentans) in synovial fluid (SF) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) was first examined by PCR assay in TMD patients. Two SF samples out of 14 were positive for Mycoplasma DNA. M.fermentans and its cell lysate were further examined whether they could induce cytokine production in murine peritoneal macrophages (PEC). Both whole cell lysate and TritonX-114 extract from M.fermentans could induce TNF-α and IL-1β production from PEC. The cytokine levels were high enough as PEC were stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). These results suggest the possible role of M.fermentans as a causal factor of ReA, which further proceeds to TMD.
