Abstract : In studying a group of 115 permanent dentition subjects with hyperdivergent skeletal frames, it was evident that the posture of the mandible involved anteroposterior position, and the degree of hyperdivergency was related to the cant of the occlusal plane. Different occlusal planes were examined to establish a functional determinant for different types of openbite malocclusions. The results indicated that the upper posterior occlusal plane is the most significant determinant for creating different types of openbite malocclusions. The hyperdivergency of the lower face was closely related with a steep cant of the posterior occlusal plane, indicating that a steeper posterior occlusal plane with insufficient vertical height created a more hyperdivergent type of lower face. The anteroposterior mandibular position was also related to the cant of the upper posterior occlusal plane, indicating that a steeper posterior occlusal plane created a more retrognathic mandible. The inclination of the posterior occlusal plane associated with the increment of vertical dento-alveolar height is also a critical element for forward mandibular growth. These results suggest that the reconstruction of the posterior occlusal plane is important in the treatment of the hyperdivergent type of malocclusion.
