Abstract : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of fluoride dentifrice and toothbrushing habits in Japan. A survey, using questionnaires was conducted on a total of 716 subjects consisting of infants aged 1.5 years, 3 years, kindergarten children and their guardians(mainly mothers)in a certain city in Japan where a dental health program was being enforced. The following results were obtained. 1. The percentages of those using fluoride dentifrice to the dentifrice users were 94% among 1.5 year olds, 79% among 3 year olds, 88% among kindergarten children and 78% among their guardians. However, the percentages of fluoride dentifrice users who answered "fluoride" when asked why they used dentifrice was only 59% among 1.5 year olds, 43% among 3 year olds and 51% among the kindergarten children. 2. The first reason given for using dentifrice by each group of children were either "fluoride" or "caries prevention." Among the guardians, the first reason given was "caries prevention," and those giving the reason of "fluoride" ranged from the 4th to 8th position. 3. The introduction of foam-type dentifrices and the supervision of the community dental health program contributed to the increase in dentifrice users among 1.5 year olds. However, 56% of these gave as the reason for not using dentifrice that 1.5 year olds are "unable to rinse." 4. The amount of dentifrice used most frequently was, less than 1/3 of the length of the head of the toothbrush head among 1.5 year olds, less than 1/3 or 1/3~2/3 among the next group of children, and 1/3~2/3 among the guardians(chi-square test, P<0.000). The amount of dentifrice used by the guardians was less than 1/3 of the length of the head of the toothbrush. When the children squeezed the dentifrice by themselves, the 3 year old children tended to use less than 1/3, while the 4, 5 and 6 year old children tended to use between 1/3 and 2/3 (chi-square test, P<0.000). 5. The most method of rinsing the mouth after toothbrushing most frequently used was rinsing with beakers, but there were other ways among the 1.5 year old infants. The number of those who used mouthrinsing was mainly less than three times among the infants, however, this was more than three times among the guardians. The number of those who used mouth-rinsing increased corresponding to the amount of dentifrice used among the guardians(chi-square test P<0.001).
