Abstract : The purpose of this study was to examine the dental caries of kindergarten children and schoolchildren in a certain school in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, PR China, and to evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of the programs for dental caries prevention. Dental examination was performed on 321 kindergarten children(3 to 5 years of age), 249 first graders(6 years of age), 244 third graders(8 years of age), and 429 seventh graders(12 years of age)in October, 1998. The examination was based on the criteria of the School Dental Health Supervision in Japan, which excludes small changes such as white spots or discolored fissures from dental caries. The subjects were children in one kindergarten, one elementary school and one junior high school affiliated with a certain university in Nanchang City. The average dft(total of dt and ft)and dental caries prevalence rate in the primary dentition of kindergarten children and schoolchildren were very high compared with those of Japanese children, and were similar to the average values for Chinese children. In terms of permanent dentition, the average DMFT, DMFS and dental caries prevalence rate were very low compared with the findings of National Surveys in Japan and China. In particular, the DMFT and DMFS of the seventh grade children were very low, at 0.54 and 0.75 respectively. However dental caries prevalence in the first molars among the school children was very high compared with Japanese children, the dental caries prevalence rates of upper and lower dentition at 12years of age were 21.5% and 78.5% respectively. It is suggested that an appropriate school-based program which would decrease the prevalence of dental caries in the lower first molars of schoolchildren in Nanchang City would consist of fluoride mouthrinsing, one of the most effective methods for the prevention of dental caries, together with a sealant program.
