Abstract : [Abstract] With a rise in the aged population, preservation of a natural dentition becomes critical in maintaining health and lessening the effects of aging. Tooth loss due to periodontal disease, which advances with aging, disturbs the balance in a physiological occlusal system. In periodontal therapy, diseased periodontium is removed in symptomatic treatment and regenerative therapy is usually performed using synthetic materials. However, there are limitations in achieving complete reorganization. For the establishment of a more definite treatment that includes total reconstruction of the physiological occlusion system, regeneration of cementum and periodontal ligaments located between teeth and bone must be developed. This strategy should be based on the embryological development processes of these components of the periodontium. Establishment of a cementoblast progenitor cell line would provide us with the possibility of developing a new periodontal therapy which utilizes tissue engineering, as well as a means of developing an implant that includes periodontal ligaments.
