Abstract : To improve the mechanical properties and to reduce the amount of water sorption of denture base resin, polymerization characterization of novel three fluoro-subustituted monomers (MAF-TBE, MAF-MAE, MAF-TBN) and three styrene type monomers (PTBS, PACS, PEES) and copolymerization of the monomers and MMA was studied. And the mechanical properties and water sorption of the copolymers prepared from the monomers and MMA were tested. The polymerization reactivity of the monomers by BPO were lower than MMA except for PACS. However, the copolymerization reactivity of the monomers and MMA were good except for MAF-TBN. The bending strengths of the copolymers contained 10 mol % of MAF-TBE, MAF-MAE, PTBS or PACS were similar value compared with that of PMMA. Those of the copolymers contained MAF-TBN or PEES were lower. Amount of water sorption of the MMA-monomer copolymers except for PACS were about one-half compared with that of PMMA.
