Abstract : [Abstract] Engineering new bone tissue using cells and a synthetic extracellular matrix (scaffolding) represents an alternative strategy for the regeneration of mineralized tissues compared with the transplantation of bone (autografts or allografts). In particular, the tissue engineering of bone by combining bone-marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) with a porous β-TCP scaffold is considered a promising technique. Here, we summarize the recent evidence of basic fibroblast growth factor and estradiol-17β, in regard to the functional significance of supplement addition in the bone formation of BMSCs.
