Abstract : [Abstract] This study was designed to assess the reliability and validity of the Dental Beliefs Scale (DBS)i n Turkey. A DBS test was administered to 436 non-clinical subjects, 94 regular dental patients, and 21 dental patients who were considered to have clinical dental fear. The internal consistency and the test-retest correlations of the DBS were excellent. The scale had significant correlations with the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) and the Dental Fears Scale (DFS). Non-clinical participants scored the highest on the scale whereas regular dental patients scored the lowest. Subjects with a previous adverse dental experience scored higher on several negative dental belief items. These findings pointed to a vicious circle in dental medicine : Negative dental beliefs may interfere with the delivery of dental health services and poor quality dental services may further reinforce negative dental beliefs. The high prevalence of negative dental beliefs among the non-clinical participants in the present study underlines the importance of this vicious circle for community dental health in Turkey.
