Abstract : [ABSTRACT] Although elevated GLUT1 expression has been described in many cancers, the extent of its expression has not been reported for human salivary gland tumors. In this study, retrospective analysis of GLUT1 expression was performed by immunohistology, and we investigate the association between its expression and prognosis in patients with salivary gland tumors. A difference in GLUT1 expression was recognized between benign and malignant tumor (p=0.010). The cumulative survival rate of high expression group was significantly lower than that of low expression group (p=0.0218). GLUT1-positive tumor cells were mainly localized at a distance from blood vessels or around necrotic foci. GLUT1 mRNA levels in malignant tumors were higher than that of normal salivary gland tissue. These results suggest that overexpression of GLUT1 in salivary grand tumors associated with hypoxia. In conclusion GLUT1 is useful prognostic information and assistant tool of diagnosis in patients of salivary gland tumors.
