Abstract : [ABSTRACT] The effect of masticatory activity biting response in stress-changed dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) leveis in the rat hippocampus were studied using an intracerebral microdialysis technique. Rats were exposed to a 60 minutes restraint stress with or without being allowed to bite a wooden stick. Restraint stress increased DA release was significantly decreased in compadson with that of the biting group. 5-HT release with biting condition was significantly increased compared with that of the restraint stress group. These findings strongly suggest that biting of masticatory activity during restraint exposure changes stress-released DA and 5-HT in the rat hippocampus. DA and 5-HT release levels with the effect by biting, suggests that nerve transmitter substance is an important factor in determining the concentration of the autonomic nervous system in the extracellular fluid. We observed a possible anti-stress effect of biting and a role of para-functional masticatory activity in coping with stressful events.
