Abstract : | [Points] ・Critical appraisal is one of the essential skills for dentists to read papers in order to resolve patients' clinical problems. ・Several guides exist that help to understand the process of critical appraisal. If an article is read according to these guides, it becomes easier to review its validity and clinical importance. ・ The Consolidated Standards for Reporting Trials (CONSORT) is a guideline for the writing and reviewing of articles on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). CONSORT has standardized the reporting of RCTs in a transparent manner. Clinical questions are often resolved by reference to the Cochrane Library and other secondary information sources. Some topics of dental research have already been reviewed by specialists in these published sources. These topics make it easy to ascertain clinical usefulness because the treatment methods and research methodologies used are established in dental practice. However, secondary information sources are not always suitable for resolving our clinical questions. For example, there may not have been time for the accumulation of sufficient scientific knowledge in a relatively new research topic, and studies conducted in similar clinical settings for us may be more useful than the accumulated results of meta-analysis. In these cases, we read individual reports to solve our clinical questions. |
