Abstract : This chapter presents some strong evidence applicable in the field of orthodontic practice. A selection was made from the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine (CEBM), Levels of Evidence (May 2001), Systematic Reviews (SRs) and Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). Based on the Oxford CEBM, the evidence levels of SR and RCT are denoted as 1a and 1b, respectively. First, a brief evaluation of the Cochrane reviews related to orthodontic treatment will be presented. Cochrane systematic reviews are known as the strongest evidence regarding facts. Amongst the orthodontic data, two pieces of evidence were found that are usable, two that are inconclusive, and some protocols that are in process now. The usable evidence concerns caries prevention in orthodontic patients and the correction of primary molar crossbite. All the remainder, including the protocols, is considered to be important in orthodontic practice; hence the inconclusive evidence is also shown. From individual RCTs, the effect of early treatment in Class II patients and precoated brackets will be demonstrated.
