Abstract : [Abstract] Various studies have reported the effects of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) on the regeneration of periodontal tissues. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has also been applied for the regeneration of periodontal tissue in clinical cases. Although some studies showed significantly enhanced cementum formation on rhBMP-2 application, others did not. Slight ankylosis was also reported in most of the studies. The mechanism by which rhBMP-2 enhances cementum formation is not clear. This paper introduces overviews of two studies regarding periodontal tissue regeneration using rhBMP-2 and EMD in circumstances where there is inhibition of periodontal ligament tissue. The results from the first study indicate that rhBMP-2 (0.4mg/ml) does not induce any new cementum when the coronal migration of cells from intact periodontal ligament tissue is inhibited. The results from the second study indicate that the EMD application seems to enhance connective tissue attachment.
