Abstract : [Introduction] The goal of reconstructive surgery for critical defects of the jawbone after tumor excisions or injuries is to regenerate physiological bone that permits the use of dentures or dental implants. Recent developments in tissue engineering have brought such a goal closer to reality. The basic strategy of bone tissue engineering is to incorporate into the target site one or more of the fundamental elements necessary for bone formation such as a scaffold, bioactive factors to stimulate cellular proliferation and differentiation, and osteoprogenitor cells, which then induce bone formation while guiding the tissuerepairing function of the living body. A mere scaffold and / or bioactive factor may suffice for the induction of osteoprogenitor cells or stem cells from the surrounding tissue that is necessary for bone regeneration if a bone defect is small (e.g. GTR and GBR). If the defect is larger, however, it is necessary to provide cells from an external source. In such a case, there are two approaches.
