Abstract : | For a period of several days, a group of people worked together in a Thai village to provide dental care and preventive dental education. This team included people from Thailand and Japan; it included dentists, dental technicians, physicians, a pharmacist, nurses, dental assistants, equipment specialists, translators, support staff, and a musician. I do not know how the shuttles were scheduled to pick up people in the surrounding areas, but the number of people waiting for registration or for any particular treatment never became a problem. Likewise, there were never times in which there were too few patients to keep the dental professionals and other medical personnel busy. "Cutting" into the queue for the dental evaluation was a minor problem reported by one of the Thai physicians. All the volunteers, from the dentists to the young ladies cleaning and sterilizing instruments, conscientiously attended to their duty. They worked hard, without grumbling or complaining, and it was clear to all of us looking on that these people were volunteering from the heart. There was a quiet buzz of activity that continued almost unbroken. Children who were waiting, either to register or to wait for others in their group to finish, gathered in small groups and entertained themselves. |
