Abstract : Ossifying fibroma(OF)is considered to be a benign neoplasm and is generally recognized by various degrees of formation of mineralized tissues. However, the mechanism concerning mineralized tissue formation is not well understood. In the present study, we investigated whether there are correlatiorns between the hard tissue formation of OF and core-binding factor a1(Cbfa1). Resected materials of OF were transplanted into subcutaneous regions of six-week-old SCID mice(N=6). The transplanted grafts were analyzed after 60 days in three mice and in another after 120 days in three mice. The proportion of mineralized tissue areas in tumors was 3.8±0.8%before transplantation;the proportion at 60 dayswas 74.5+-4.1%; and the proportion at 120 days was 86.5+-6.50%. The mean Cbfa1 labeling index value was 11.5+-2.3 before transplantation, 69.5+-3.6 at 60 days, and 70.0+-3.5 at 120 days. Significant differences were found between the conditions before transplantation andat 60 days and 120 days(p<0.05). It was suggested that expression of Cbfa1 may be associated with the formation of mineralized tissue in OF.
