Abstract : [ABSTRACT] Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst coated with fluoridated apatite (FAp-TiO2) was synthesized by adding a fluoride ion to TiO2 coated with apatite (HAp-TiO2). This study investigated the antifungal and inhibitory effects of acrylic resin containing FAp-TiO2 against Candida albicans. The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=4) as follows : 1) acrylic resin (control) ; 2) acrylic resin containing 5% FAp-TiO2 (FAp) ; 3) acrylic resin containing 5% HAp-TiO2 (HAp) ; 4) acrylic resin contaming 5% TiO2 (Ti). For the assay, C.albicans cells were placed onto the specimens under UVA from a black light source. In both the antifungal activity and inhibitory tests, there was a statistically significant decrease was observed with FAp, HAp, and Ti when compared wiith the control (p<0.01). Scarming electron microscope observations revealed dents and irregular contours in C.albicans in the FAp group. The results suggest that acrylic resin containing FAp-TiO2 has a strong antifungal effect and prevents the adhesion of C.albicans.
