Abstract : [Abstract] Mast cells play a critical role in host defense against bacterial infection, as well as in immediate-type allergic reactions. We investigated the distribution of mast cells and expression of mast cell Toll-like receptors (TLR) in rat tongue epithelia. Mast cells were preferentially distributed in the muscle layer rather than in the lamina propria. Expression of TLR-4 was observed in mast cells in the lamina propria, and strong positive staining was detected in mast cells in the muscle layer. No positive staining for TLR-2 was observed in rat tongue epithelia.
