Abstract : [ABSTRACT] Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) promotes survival and differentiation of the cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems. BDNF has been identified in non-neural tissue, including the heart, lung, platelets, lymphocytes, and lacrimal glands. Although the role of BDNF in the adult CNS is unclear, there is a rapidly growing body of evidence implicating BDNF in neuronal degeneration/regeneration mechanisms. Previous studies have demonstrated that BDNF played a role in the eating behavior and glucose and lipid metabolism. In this study we measured the plasma BDNF and saliva BDNF levels in diagnosted high-fat diet group. Serum triacylglycerols, saliva triacylglycerols, serum leptine, total protein and total cholesterol of high-fat diet group was significantly higher than in control group. The plasma BDNF level was found to significantly increase in high-fat diet group in comparison to that in control group. These results provide the first evidence that an increased BDNF is associated with metabolic syndrome.
