Abstract : [Abstract] A new toothbrushing method called the Toothpick method was established to remove plaque and to relieve inflammation in the interdental area, which might be one of the sources of oral malodor. This study examines and compares the effects on oral malodor of patients with periodontitis of professional toothbrushing using the Toothpick method with the method of mouthwash and tongue-cleaning, which is considered to be most effective. Seventeen oral malodor patients with periodontitis were randomly assigned to receive either professional toothbrushing once a week or mouthwash and tongue-cleaning twice a day at home. After three weeks of the treatment, and for the following three weeks, all subjects received both methods of treatment. The organoleptic score, volatile sulfur compound (VSC) concentration and quantity of tongue coating were recorded each week. The periodontal condition was assessed at baseline and weeks 3 and 6. A Mann-Whitney U-test was performed to evaluate any changes in clinical data in each group from baseline to weeks 1, 2 and 3, and week 3 to weeks 4, 5and 6. The organoleptic score and VSC concentration significantly decreased from baseline to week 2 or 3 and the levels remained steady until week 6 in both groups. Bleeding on probing was significantly decreased from baseline to week 3 in the toothbrushing group but not in the mouthwash/tongue-cleaning group. Professional toothbrushing by the Toothpick method was as effective as mouthwash and tongue-cleaning in reducing the oral malodor of patients with periodontitis.
