Abstract : [Abstract] The dispersion of hydrophobic monomers, such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl phenyl)propane] (BisGMA) in a medium was analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography. The concentration of MMA in the medium was gradually reduced over nine hours to an infinitesimal quantity both with and without 1 mass% dimethyl sulfoxide in the media. On the other hand, the concentration of BisGMA in the upper fraction of the medium was higher than that of the lower. These facts showed that the MMA and BisGMA in the medium were not homogeneously dispersed and that the cytotoxic test could not be relied upon to give a correct evaluation. However, there was no difference in the concentration of TEGDMA between the upper and lower fractions of the medium, because, in contrast with BisGMA, TEGDMA is a hydrophilic compound.
