Abstract : [Abstract] when exposed to light, a titanium dioxide photocatalyst oxidizes harmful chemical substances that have come into contact with it, such as microbes, molds, odors and soil, and eliminates them by decomposition into carbon dioxide and the like. The authors confirm the effectiveness of photo-catalysts in the decomposition of tooth coloring pigments and developed and report on a tooth whitener that employs a titanium dioxide photocatalyst. An apatite coated TiO2 photocatalyst composite has the function of adsorbing and decomposing bacteria and various other materials. [Photocatalyst] When exposed to light, a titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst is capable of decomposing and degrading a variety of organic substances or odors. Also, when TiO2 absorbs light with an energy greater than its band gap, its valence electrons are excited and transfer into the conduction band, creating positive holes in the valence band. The excited electrons and positive holes interact with one another. Because it is a substance that is found in abundance, and has been proven to be safe and harmless, TiO2 has been studied as a photocatalyst.
