Abstract : [Abstract] This paper introduces the mechanical properties and antifungal and antifouling functions of denture-base resin containing an apatite-coated titanium dioxide (Ap-TiO2) photocatalyst. The titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts studied here were an anatase type of Ap-TiO2 and TiO2 particles. Denture-base resin containing Ap-TiO2 and TiO2 particles was irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light. The flexural strength (Fs) and flexural modulus (Fm) were evaluated by the standards set by the International Standards Organization (ISO 1567). The surface morphology and composition of specimens were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Candida albicans was used to assay the antifungal effects of the specimen plates under ultraviolet A (UVA) with a black-light source. We found that denture-base resin containing less than 5wt% of Ap-TiO2 satisfies the requirements of ISO 1567 for both Fs and Fm. It is expected that the higher the mixing concentration, the stronger the antifungal effect. The SEM observations showed that no pores on the surface in both the irradiated and unirradiated specimens of denture-base resin containing Ap-TiO2. In conclusion, it is suggested that denture-base resin containing less than 5wt% Ap-TiO2 has clinically useful mechanical properties and an antifungal effect.
