Abstract : | [Abstract] Unlike the connective tissue around natural dentition, the connective tissue around an implant is characterized by a scar-like structure that is rich in collagen but deficient in fibroblasts. The fibroblastic richness of the mucosal tissue surrounding dental implant surfaces ensures a high turnover and may play a role in establishing and maintaining a proper mucosal seal and protective mechanism. To ensure success in treatment, it is therefore important to develop bioactive materials that facilitate fibroblastic proliferation in mucosal peri-implant tissue. We developed a titanium dioxide (TiO2)-coated implant abutment surface. The surface morphology of this surface was smooth and hydrophilic or super-hydrophilic. Proliferation of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts significantly increased on the TiO2-coated disks compared with that on the uncoated disks and depended upon the thickness of the coated film. This study suggests that hydrophilic TiO2-coated implant abutment surface modification may promote the formation of implant-circumferential connective tissue rich in fibroblasts and promote an effective barrier mechanism against the external environment. |
