Abstract : [Abstract] Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common, intractable inflammatory lesion with chronic hyperkeratosis in the oral mucosa, the etiology of which remains unknown. In order to investigate the function of mast cells in OLP lesions, we histopathologically examined the distribution of mast cells in OLP. Samples were taken from 18 patients who had been pathologically diagnosed with OLP and these were stained using toluidine blue. The distribution of mast cells was observed, the mast cells were counted at three locations under 400× magnification and the mean was calculated. The number of mast cells was observed to increase in OLP compared to that in normal oral mucosa. In OLP with bilateral reticular patterns, the mast cells were distributed in the deepest areas among infiltrative lymphocytes. The distinctive distribution of mast cells suggests some involvement in the pathogenesis of OLP.
