Abstract : [Abstract] The setting time of β-calcium sulfate hemihydrates (CSH) decreases with the addition of calcium hydrogen phosphate dehydrate (CHPD) crystal. On the other hand, a calcium hydrogen phosphate (CHP) crystal significantly retards the hardening reaction of the CSH. Neither the supernatant of the solution present in the CHPD nor the CHP crystal affected the setting time at all. To consider the retarded reaction of the CHP to the CSH, a strontium hydrogen phosphate (SrHP) and its supernatant, and a barium hydrogen phosphate (BaHP) crystal and its supernatant were introduced to the CSH suspension. The setting time was unaffected by the presence of SrHP crystal, the hardening reaction of the CSH was significantly retarded by the BaHP crystal, and supernatants prepared from SrHP was found to have no significant influence on the setting time. From these results, the authors propose that it is the outer layer of the CHP crystal that influences the setting time of CSH. The zeta-potential value (ζ-potential) was measured to yield information on the outer layer of the CHP crystal. The ζ-potential of the CHP or the CHPD crystal was calculated from the measurement of the electrophoresis of these crystals. The ζ-potential magnitude of the CHP crystal was found to be more negative than that of the CHPD crystal.
