Abstract : In approaching the practical problem of providing persons with effective reparative services for dental caries, it becomes of some utility to recognize that the yearly increment of dental caries affords a quantitative estimate of the amount of treatment required each year. According to this concept, a direct approach to the measurement of the incidence of particular morbidities was studied. Analyses of material collected from detailed dental examination of 1,324 persons (610 males and 714 females) between the ages of 0 and 20 years attending the population of two communities of Tokyo in Japan were done. The incrment of caries experience was determined by making dental examinations on a given date and again one year later. Results are as follows : 1. Evident increment of dft or dfs is observed at the ages of 2 and 3 years. 2. Evident increment of DMFT or DMFS is observed at the ages between 10 and 14 years. 3. The two peaks of evident caries increment were more sharp and high in females than in males.
