Abstract : In order to compare the retention force of polycarboxylate cement with that of zinc phosphate cement and to analyze the retentive charactetistic of this new cementing media, shearing resitance at side wall of the prepared cavity, bond strength to enamel, dentin and metal surfaces, and mechanical properties of these materials were determined. Three brands of polycarboxylate cement which were commercially avairable in Japan and one zinc phosphate cement were selected for the experiment. The following results were obtained. 1) Although slightly differences were observed between three brands, retentive values of all carboxylate cements were higher than that of zinc phosphate cement. 2) The compressive strength of polycarboxylate cements were lower than that of zinc phosphate cement, though a little differences were found amoung them. 3) On the contrary, the tensile strength of polycarboxylate cement were highar than that of zinc phosphate cement. 4) On the bond strength to enamel and dentin surfaces, polycarboxylate cement showed remarkably higher value in comparison with zinc phosphate cement while no appreciable bond strength were measured to both surfaces prepared with 20k gold alloy and Au-Ag-palladium alloy. 5) From these experimental results, it could be considered that retention force of polycarboxylate cement are mainly attributed to the mechanical interlocking force of the hardened cement between the surface irregularities of the tooth and the cast rstoration, and the more importance, therefore, might be presumably given for tensile strength rather than for its adhesive property.
