Abstract : [Abstract] : The effects of trace elements (Sr, Se, Mo and Cd) on the Ca-PO4-H2O precipitates were studied through the precipitating system (0.01M orthophosphoric acid-saturated calcium hydroxide solution) containing 0, 1 and 10 ppm and F ion (NaF), respectively. Each trace element was added to the precipitating system with the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm, respectively. These systems were stored at room temperature for 21 days, and the pH values of the supernatant fluids were measured once a day. Then, each precipitate was analyzed to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns, the apparent particle size, Ca/Pratio and Ca/F ratio. In the present studies, the conclusions were as follows. 1. The promoting effect with F ions only on the calcium phosphate precipitation was clearely observed. 2. The evident promoting or inhibiting effects of each trace element on the calcium phosphate precipitates were not observed. A slight inhibiting tendency, however, was observed when Se ion was present in the precipitating system. 3. From the results of Ca/P ratio and X-ray diffraction patterns of precipitates, it could be inferred that these precipitates may be apatites or the apatite-like precipitates. 4. The crystal growth of apatites was suppressed by Se, Mo or Cd ions, especially by Se ion. However, those by Sr ion was not observed. 5. Therefore, it was seen that the facilitating effect of F ions on the synthetic procedures of apatites were undeniable, but these effects of fluoride could be inhibited by some trace elements such as selenium ion.
