Abstract　： 「緒言」 Streptococcus mutans(以下S.mutans)のう蝕原性について, 遺伝学的な面から種々の検討がなされている. Edwardssonはコロニー形態の異なるS.mutansのう蝕誘発性を検討して, rough型の親株と, それより生じたmucoid型およびsmooth型の変異株とでう蝕誘発性は類似していたと報告している. これに対して, de Stoppelaarらは, う蝕原性S.mutansに変異誘起剤ethyl methane sulphonateを作用させてガラス壁固着性を欠いた変異株を得, この変異株のう蝕誘発性は親株に比して著しく減少したと報告し, さらに, この変異株はEdwardssonの用いた変異株とはまったく異なるものであると述べている. また, Clewellら, ならびにDunnyらはう蝕原性S.mutansに染色体外遺伝子であるplasmidが存在していることを報告し, う蝕原性とplasmidとの関係が注目されている.

Abstract　： Abstract : A variant of Streptococcus mutans E49 was isolated by selecting smooth colonies among the rough and heaped colonies of parent strain. This strain, compared to the parent strain, had lost the ability to form sticky deposits on hard surfaces and decreased the productivity of insoluble polysaccharides in sucrose medium, but not changed in any other characteristic studied, including haemolysis on sheep blood-agar, final pH, acid from sugars, production of ammonia from arginine, hydrolysis of esculin, growth at 45℃ and resistance to eight drugs.
