Abstract : Abstract : In recent years there have been quite a few studies in the dental field which treat force exerted on the teeth as vibratory shock in making a vibratory science study on the ossa faciei and the ossa cranii. Studies have been made in the past at this research unit on the attenuation potential of the shock transmitted to the periodontal tissue when enforced vibration is applied to the canine teeth of dogs as well as analysis of wave frequency values. Through such research it was realized that the presence of the soft tissue influences in some way the vibratory transfer characteristics of the periodontal tissue. In this present study the objective was taking a further step toward clarifying this question as well as making clear the vibratory characteristics of the mandibular joints and the following experiment was performed. For laboratory specimens the severed legs of freshly-killed chickens were used with the hip joints intact, some where the skin and soft tissue were retained and some where the articulation was retained but the skin and soft tissue had been removed as much as possible. Using random-noise as the source of vibration the vibration received was measured with an accelerometer pick up making use of 1/3 octave band pass filter analysis. Measured were : 1) weight difference among the bones, 2) weight difference among the soft tissues, 3) vibratory characteristics of the soft tissues, 4) changes appearing from bone severance, and 5) vibratory characteristics of the bone and joints using five separate measurement methods. Results were as follows : Result : 1) It was determined that the sympathetic vibration peak for the bones lay in the 63 Hz - 2 KHz bandwidth. 2) The vibratory attenuation potential for the soft tissue was extremely high in the frequency ranges above 500 Hz. 3) It was thought that when the length on the soft tissue from the vibratory point was doubled then there would be a 40 dB to 30 dB rate of attenuation in the 31.5 Hz - 250 Hz bandwidth.
