Abstract : Abstract : The trigemino-autonomic nerve reflex, which plays an important role in in the irritation syndrome (Reilly syndrome) in the oral region, was studied from the viewpoint of the fiber connection between trigeminal nucleus and vagus nucleus using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method as well as electrophysiological method. The following results were obtained. 1) Evoked unit responses induced by trigeminal (infraorbital) nerve stimulation in rats were observed in spinal trigeminal nucleus and nucleus of solitary tract. 2) Horsradish peroxidase injected into the central portion of the ganglion trigeminale labeled the neurons in the spinal trigeminal nucleus, nucleus of solitary tract and nucleus ambiguus. 3) Horseradish peroxidase injected into cervical vagus trunk and gastric wall labeled the neurons in the vagus nucleus. 4) Histological fiber analysis of the central portion of the ganglion trigeminale showed that fiber occupied about 70% of total fibers. The above findings suggest that trigeminal nerve irritation, such as a surgical operation in the oral cavity, affects the various organs via the trigeminal nucleus and vagus nucleus.
