Abstract : Abstract : We investigated the effects of ovariectomy and of injection of testosterone on intercalated duct cells, especially on granular intercalated duct cells in the submandibular glands of adult female mice. Two portions of the intercalated duct are seen : a non-granular portion and a more distal granular portion connecting to acini. Secretory granules in the granular intercalated duct cells are circular, oval or irregularly shaped and have various electron density. The smooth ER have been consistently observed at the luminal surface of the non-granular intercalated duct cells. The submandibular gland, except granular intercalated duct cells, showed no morphological changes by ovariectomy. The number of granular intercalated duct cells, however, decreased, when female mice were castrated. The number of cells in castrated female mice were two-fifth or three-fifth of that in mormal female. Testosterone treatment was also decreased the number of cells of granular intercalated duct. When female mice were castrated and treated by testosterone, the amount of granules decreased and observed smooth ER at the luminal surface of the granular intercalated duct cells. It was demonstrated that intermediate forms between granular and non-granular intercalated duct cells, and granular intercalated duct cells are converted to non-granular intercalated duct cells. These results suggest that the granular intercalated duct cells in the submandibular glands of adult female mice are controlled by estrogen, and the sexual dimorphism is further defined by this study.
