Abstract　： 「緒言」 Streptococcus mutansは, 1924年, J. K. Clarkeにより分離, 命名されたが, 当時からう蝕の原因菌がLactobacilliと考えられていたので, 評価は非常に低かった. しかしながら, 1954年以降, Orland, Keyes, Fitzgeraldらにより無菌動物を用いた実験から, う蝕は細菌性疾患であることが証明されて以来, Str. mutansがう蝕原性細菌として注目を浴びるようになった. このようにStr. mutansの研究が30年間以上という長い空白期間があった原因としては, Str. mutansの選択性を有する培地の開発が遅れたことが挙げられる. 今日では, 1946年Chapmanが発表したMitis Salivarius agar(以後MS培地と略す)と1973年Goldらがそれを改良したMS培地が広く使われている. しかし, MS培地, MSB培地では, Str. mutans以外の口腔レンサ球菌も発育し, コロニーの形状観察でStr. mutansを鑑別することは困難な場合がある.

Abstract　： Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth of Streptococcus mutans, oral Streptococci except Str. mutant and other bacteria in order to evaluate the utility of KKY medium. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The growth of serotype a-g of Sir. mutans in KKY medium was good and the colony appered yellow. 2. The growth of oral Streptococci except Str. mutans in KKY medium was not good, and the colony appered translucent. 3. The growth of oral bacteria revealed that the size and color of the colony is different from that of Sir. mutans. This observation enabled us to easily identify Str. mutans in KKY medium.
