Abstract : [Abstract] : As bone implant material, synthetics have come into the limelight in recent years. For use in periodontal treatment, efforts are being made to develop low-cost, alloplastic materials that excel in bone formation ability, biocompatibility as well as biodegradability. In this report, Synthograft, developed as a new biodegradable implant material for such use that is composed chiefly of β-tricalcium phosphate is presented, and the results of its clinical application assesaresed from the viewpoint of radiology. The cases with bone defects due to periodontitis and pulpal diseases were examined three to twelve months after Synthograft were implanted. On radiological examination, the implant material was found to be compatible with new bones, but as regards the contact with the root surface, there was room for improvement. To develop more refined transplant materials, it is deemed necessary to establish prognostic assessment standards and make further studies on bone morphogenesis and the congruence of substitute materials with the root surface.
