Abstract : In this study, comparison were made with setting and working times, film thickness, mechanical properties, and solubility and disintegration of ten brands of luting cement including zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate, glass ionomer and resin cements which commercially available in Japanese market. Three different powder-liquid ratios were employed for mixing of cements i. e. the ratio for standard consistency, the ratio recommended by manufacturer and the ratio by the attached dispenser to each material, and the influences of these powder-liquid ratios on the various properties of cements were examined. In addition, the suitability of the consistencies as the luting cement for cast restoration were asked for nine operators after mixing of various cements with various powder-liquid ratios of the cements used. The results obtained were as follows; 1) Determinations of each property in all cements tested met the requirements described in JIS Specification Standards except the disintegration of glass ionomer cements which demonstrated remarkably higher value than that of specified level. 2) Inadequacy of powder-liquid ratios were found in manufacturer's instructions and attached dispenser, particularly, the increase of the amount of powder were detected in dispensing of zinc phosphate and glass ionomer cements. A little increase of film thickness was observed due to the increase of the amount of powder dispensed in zinc phosphate cements and the over-dispensing of powder resulted in the increase of film thickness and the determinations of consistency and setting time were impossible in glass ionomer cements・ 3) For the zinc phosphate, glass ionomer and resin cements, judgement for consistency of mixed cements as the luting materials were convinced but differences were found to the mix of polycarboxylate cements.
