Abstract : Measurement of the vibratory characteristics of extracted teeth has been carried out using various methods. However, results can differ considerably depending on the method. Determination of these characteristics is important it form starting point for occlusal sound research in the field of dentistry. As an answer to this problem, the author used modal analysis to determine sympathetic vibration frequencies in an extracted tooth. The experimental system consisted of a minishaker, a laser doppler vibrometer (LDV), a 2ch FFT analyzer and a computer. Modal analysis is a method which uses a transfer function of m/sec2/N as basis in determining the vibratory characteristics of the object. The angles of vibration were 90°, 45°, and 0°in relation to the root axis, the area where sympathetic vibration is most likely to occur. Resuts showed peaks of 1525.8 Hz, 1833.6 Hz, 2227.2 Hz and 4264.0 Hz. Results of modal analysis showed the second third peaks to be the sympathetic frequency of the tooth. To summarize results: 1. Modal analysis of the teeth was recognized an an effective procedure in the random noise vibration method. 2. Sympathetic vibration of extracted teeth using modal analysis was found to be 1833.6 Hz and 2227.2 Hz at an angle of 90°. Seen in terms of the Q-value of sympathetic vibration, 2227.2 Hz can be considered a sharper sympathetic vibration. 3. Using the present experimental method, no sympathetic vibration frequency was determined at a vibratory angle of 0°.
