Abstract : Single unit activities of the cortical taste cells in response to taste stimuli(1.0M sucrose, 0.1M NaCl, 0.03M HC1, 0.01M quinine-HC1)applied to the surface of the tongue were recorded in rats. Most of the cortical taste cells were located within the ventral taste area and deep in the layer V. Response characteristics of the cortical taste cells were as follows: 1) The cortical taste cells showed relatively high rate of spontaneous discharges and a low response rate to taste stimuli compared with discharges in the chorda tympani nerve. 2) Initial phasic response was not clcar in the cortical taste cells except for NaCl stimuli. 3) Some cortical taste cells decreased thier spontaneous discharges in response to taste stimuli. 4) The cortical cells did not show definitive concentration-response functions for NaCl. The relationship between the response magnitude and stimulus intensity in the NaCl-sensitive cells approximated Stevens' power function. 5) In the cortical taste cells, no "chemotopic organization" was clearly recognized. 6) Correlations among responses to the four basic taste solutions were all very high, suggesting nonconformity to the across-neuron pattern theory. 7) Discrimination of differences in the basic taste of the four taste solutions in the cortical taste area almost matched the labeled-line theory.
