Abstract : The significance of contact points in a prosthesis has been the object of varied studies in clinical dentistry but research so far has been limited to experiments with models where static weight is used. As a result, the theoretical background to this subject remains unclcar even today. The contact relationship between adjacent teeth is a basic structural element in the stomatognathic system which includes the dental arch. Thus, a solution to the above problem is most desirable. Since the 1965 release of the Fast Fourier Transform(FFT), Modal Analysis has been used in clarifying vibratory characteristics. Use of modal analysis in dentistry has included reports from Matsuo and Shirasawa on the resonance frequency of tooth as well as on conditions necessary in anlysis methods. In this study, the author made use of modal anlysis to measure contact relationship between adjacent teeth in a static state and to detect the vibratory characteristics of the dental arch. The following results were obtained. 1. It was possible with Modal Anlysis to determine the dimensional movement of the dental arch and the jaw. 2. In a normal dental arch(i. e. a dental arch where there is contact relationship between adjacent teeth)the movements of the dental arch and jaw were synchronized. In other words, it was discovered that the dental arch and jaw responded as a system. In addition, this phenomenon was observed at a vibration mode of approximately 1500-2000Hz. 3. Loss of contact relationship between adjacent teeth brought about a definite change in mode in response to dental arch movements. In other words, dimensional movements of the dental arch as part of a system could not be observed. The teeth moved separately. 4. In the mandible of a normal dental arch there is a unique tortional vibation mode and this mode was in the area of 700Hz.
