Abstract : Research in dentistry has clarified the mandibular rest position, centric occlusion and other mandibular positions in addition to making possible burst wave analysis in electromyograms(EMG)of the masticatory muscles. The experiment performed by the authors made use of surface electrodes which are suited to clinical application as well as a computer to analyze and correlate the t-S relation. Findings could be quickly displayed on a cathode ray tube. The aim of the study was to examine from all angles whether or not it is actually possible to include such a procedure in clinical practice as one method for testing, diagnosis and determining the effects of treatment. Results showed that this method permits on objective grasp of occlusal dysfunctions which up to now could be sensed only subjectively. It was furthermore discovered that it was possible with this furthermore discovered that it was possible with this method to give a visual display of the situation to doctor and patient. The authors performed the experimend described below concerning materials suited for maintaining masticatory muscle tension and gained a number of insights which are reported on here. The authors made use of surface electrodes, selected materials suited to maintaining masticatory muscle tension, showed patients the three stages in the state of occlusion and made computer analysis of masseter muscle EMG's in addition to analyzing the mean EMG burst interval and stadard divsion for these EMG's. 1) When the mean EMG burst interval increased, the standard division increased approximately twice as much as that reported by Tokizane, Miura and Yamada. 2) As a device for maintaining muscle tension, a resin block controlling mandibular side shift showed better results than either wax or a wooden stick. 3) It was discovered that the patient's mental calmness was also necessary for retaining tension in the masticatory muscles. Results shaw that it would be possible to apply this method to diagnosis in clinical dentistry as well as in determining the results of treatment.
