Abstract : [Abstract] : Much research has been conducted in many areas on analysis of occlusal sound as ME instruments continue to undergo improvements. The author, in his analysis of occlusal sound, used premature contact sounds at the tooth and the frontal head region and recognized the need to know differences in vibratory characteristics at different locations. An accelerometer pick-up was placed directly on the tooth to directly pick up vibration and another pick-up was pressed against the frontal region of the head to pick up vibration via the bone. Vibration was input to a 2 ch FFT capable of simultaneous recording. Analysis was carried out in terms of the frequency range and time range. Results were as follows. 1. Results of frequency analysis showed that only premature contact of metal on the tooth could be distinguished from centric occlusion. It was difficult at the frontal head region to distinguish differences in the state of occlusion. 2. Measuring vibration duration time showed a tendency in centric occlusion toward longer duration in the frontal head region compared with the tooth. The opposite was true when artificial premature contact was applied. 3. Measuring vibration transfer time showed that there was a tendency for transfer time to decrease going toward the back teeth when applying artificial premature contact. 4. Examining the degree of attenuation at peak level showed that all artificial premature contacts gave greater values than the central occusal position. 5. As the above shows, using tapping as the vibration source when measuring vibration at the tooth and frontal head region under various conditions displayed numerous differences in characteristics at the different locations. Results show that, when conducting occlusal analysis using a time range waveform as a basis, using the tooth as the measuring location prevents the influence of various other vibration media, making possible better analysis.
