Abstract : [Abstract] : Arterio-venous anastomoses are believed to behave as a control mechanism in the microcirculation by regulating peripheral blood flow to adapt the changes in the environment. In tongue of dog, especially in the subpapillary lamina propria of dorsum of tongue, there observed numberous arterio-venous anastomoses. The study was undertaken to examine the specifc morphology of arterio-venous anastomoses and its distributional difference by means of the scanning electron microscope known to be highly useful for three dimensional observation 1) Arterio-venous anastomoses distributed in tongue of dog mostly appear in S-like or similar pattern. Occasionally, straight and hook-like patterns also were identified. 2) Generally, an arteriole and a venule were mutually connected by a communicating A-V anastomosis, whereas in some occasion, an anastomosis when mading its way from arteriolar side to venular side gave off two branches (Y-like pattern), each of which connected either different venule respectively or the same venule. 3) The 2292 of A-V anastomoses were counted in the left half part of the tongue and they were observed distributed in tip of tongue, then the corpus, and the root of tongue were hardly found. 4) In comperison with the number of A-V anastomoses, the distribution of A-V anastomoses in the central portion was clearly higher than those in the marginal portion of tongue.
