Abstract : [Abstract]: The edge effect in dental xeroradiography is dependent on the development process, characteristics of the plate, x-ray projection factors and the test object. Among the x-ray projection factors, the influence of tube voltage upon the image quality of dental xeroradiography is especially great. The relationship between the characteristics of image quality of dental xeroradiography (clinical diagnostic value, contrast, sharpness and granularity) and tube voltage was studied. The results were obtained as follows : 1) X-ray photography at low voltage provided an image with edge contrast which was easily visible, while that at high voltage provided an image with weak edge contrast, suggesting a decrease in clinical diagnostic value. 2) The image obtained at higher voltage showed higher sensitivity to broad area contrast, but fog was increased and gamma decreased. 3) The image obtained at high voltage showed higher sensitivity to edge contrast, but the peak-to-peak area was narrow and gamma of the white gap and tangent was decreased. Thus, xeroradiography at high voltage induced an image with edge effect. 4) Resolution was decreased by scattered radiation in the range of 0.5-10 cycle/mm of spatial frequency area, but there was no marked tube-voltage-dependent effect on resolution. 5) There was no tube-voltage-dependent granularity in the range of concentration from 0.5 to 2.0 cycle/mm, but scattered radiation tended to reduce granularity. As described above, xeroradiographic images taken at high voltage showed high sensitivity to broad area contrast and edge contrast, but their diagnostic value decreased because of extensive fog and low edge contrast. Instead, using a relatively low tube voltage results in an image of diagnostically high value with definite edge contrast (one characteristic of image quality of dental xeroradiography).
