Abstract : [Abstract]: Effects of bradykinin (BK) were examined in isolated canine lingual artery and compared with those of acetylcholine (ACh) and norepinephrine (NE). The addition of BK or ACh caused a concentration-related relaxation in ring strips of pulmonary, carotid and mesenteric arteries contracted with NE. In contrast to the arteries stated above, lingual artery contracted with BK, while ACh elicited a relaxation in lingual artery contracted with NE. Removal of the endothelium abolished the relaxing effect of BK or ACh in pulmonary, carotid and mesenteric arteries, and the effect of ACh in lingual artery. The contractile effect of BK in lingual artery was not attenuated by removal of the endothelium. It is concluded that contractile responses of canine lingual arteries to BK do not appear to derived from endothelium-related vasoactive substances released, but rather from a direct action on vascular smooth muscle cells.
